Dolley Madison visits Bay Middle School
Bay Village League of Women
Voters (BVLWV) sponsors local actress in first-person account from popular
first lady
 |

Actress Carol Starre-Kmiecik in character as Dolley Madison (left) and posing

|
Dolley Madison loved to host parties, but our fourth first lady, who reigned
during James Madison's 1809-1817, two-term presidency, also met some frightening
challenges. She left a legacy that remains a standard for first ladies to this
day.
Bay Middle School fifth-graders heard about the life and times of
Dolley Madison through the first-person interpretation of local actress Carol
Starre-Kmiecik during a special presentation just for them, sponsored by the
League of Women Voters Cuyahoga Area, on Friday, September 11.
The former first lady served beginning around the time that the
Cahoon Family of Bay Village settled in our town (October 10, 1810). The
presentation is one of the first events arranged by the BVLWV kicking off Bay's
Bicentennial celebration, planned for October 10, 2010.

BMS art instructor and renowned
mobile artist address Bay Village Kiwanians
Public art project is
discussed
|
 |
|
Middle School art teacher Ruth Leslie (above
left) and Peninsula artist Carol Adams told Bay Village Kiwanis Club
members on Tuesday evening, September 8, how seven years of work ended in
triumph with the siting of the kinetic Adams sculpture, Aerial Gardens XII,
in the three-story foyer of the middle school. Leslie told
members that the public art project has galvanized interest in art in the
school, which has been transformed by professional and student art.
The sculpture is controlled by student-operated computers that can change
lighting designs and timing as the mobile, representing four different
middle school students, pirouettes above your head as you walk the main
corridor of the school. Adams, an internationally known artist, told the
group that the Bay students were the most enthusiastic she had encountered
in her career. [Mobile
