Announcements for December 8, 2016

1. 7th/8th grade Girls Basketball Try-outs are coming up and you need a completed physical form dropped off in the main office before you step out on the court. 8th grade try outs take place Monday evening December 12 and Tuesday December 13 from 5-6:30 pm. 7th grade try outs are Monday evening December 12, Tuesday December 13 5-6:30 pm and Thursday December 15 from 3:15-5:00 pm. Open gym dates for both grades are December 6 and 8 from 3:15-4:30 pm.

2. Any 7th or 8th grader needs to see Mr. Lackey to pick up their ski club card before or after school. Any 6th grader in ski club needs to see Mrs. Hunt to pick up their card before or after school.

3. Have you remembered to bring in your items for the Builder’s Club Community Drive? 5th and 6th grade, please bring in paper products, 7th and 8th grade bring in personal hygiene items. The highest donating homeroom for each grade level will win a donut party, so make sure to get those items in by December 9th. Thank you for helping local families to have the essential daily items that they need.

4. Just a reminder that today is the second monthly Continental Math League meet for BMS students in grades 5, 6, and 7 … during support come to room 168. 5th grade will meet in the library. Please be on time and bring a calculator! And good luck!!

They are asking for a small cash donation of your choice to support the Bay Food Ministry, which helps local families who are in financial need this holiday season. Anyone who donates may have their shoes cleaned and shined as a token of our appreciation. Remember, the fundraiser is THIS WEDNESDAY ONLY. Thank you for your consideration.

If you’re in the 7th and 8th grade please donate items like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and other personal hygiene items. If you are in the 5th or 6th grade, please donate paper products like toilet paper, paper towels, and tissues. The classroom that donates the most items in their category will receive a donut breakfast! So, when you’re out shopping this weekend, remember to pick up a few items for the Community Drive.

4. Monday begins the new BMS Community Drive. The drive will run from December 5th to the 9th and all of the donations are going to local families in need. 5th and 6th grade students are asked to donate paper items such as paper towels and toilet paper. 7th and 8th grade students are asked to donate personal hygiene items such as deodorant and mouth wash. As in previous years, there is a prize for your good deeds. The classroom that donates the most items in their category will receive a donut breakfast! Start bringing in your donated items on Monday!

3. Last week was the first Continental Math League meet for BMS students. For the meet, the top 6 scores in each grade are combined to create a team score for each grade level. Here is how the grade levels rank: 4th place: 8th grade team 21 points, 3rd place 5th grade team 32 points, 2nd place 6th grade team 35 points, and 1st place 7th grade team a perfect team score of 36 points! Perfect scores from individuals included: 5th grade … Lane Maddux and Ewan Moss, 6th grade Ryan Stein, Anna Mayer, Andy Mold, Owen Ballog, and PJ Sobczak, 7th grade Milan Oppewall, Aden Bergstresser, Laurel Petryk, Ryan Mowchan, Aidan Cashmere, Grace Beatty, Chaeli Ziebarth, Simon Miedza and Finn Fitzgerald, and in 8th grade Abbey Donahue. What prizes are you going to earn? When you sell 2 items you get a Light Up Ball. Sell 6 items you get an Emoji Pillow. Sell 12 items you get a Selfie Stick. Sell 24 items you get 2 passes to Sky Zone. Sell 48 items you get all of these great prizes AND 2 tickets to a Cavs game!

3. Congratulations to the 2016 Young Astronaut’s Day Team. Team members were 8th graders Thomas Beckwith, Jimmy Bish, Ally Bleisath, Morgan Fischer and Emma Spirollari and 7th graders Aidan Cashmere and Jack Mediate. The team participated in 3 activities and competed against 25 other schools from Northeast Ohio. The team of Jack Mediate and Jimmy Bish took 1st place in the “Virtual Rocket Challenge” which is quite impressive as the teams consisted of 7th through 12th graders! Way to go Bay Middle School. A big shout out goes to Mrs. Beckwith and Mr. Bleisath for chaperoning the event, to Mr. McAndrews for providing team T-shirts and especially to Mrs. Bergstresser who was our PTA coordinator and did a fabulous job helping coordinate the entire event.

1. Hope your sales went well this weekend. This is the last week for 8th graders to sell tumblers and cookie dough.

2. Both BMS Science Olympiad teams will meet tomorrow after school until 3:30 to discuss this years’ team T-shirt design.

3. Attention all Cross Country team members. Please be reminded that your awards banquet will be held tonight beginning at 6:00pm in the Bay Middle School Cafeteria. Families are encouraged to attend and dinner will be served.

1. How are your tumbler and cookie dough sales going? There are some great prizes this year. 3. Last day to participate in the Pumpkin Weight Guessing Challenge is where you try to guess the weight of the pumpkin in Mr. Caddey’s room 220. You have until tomorrow! The pumpkin is so massive; we couldn’t carry it to the cafeteria. Pay 50 cents and get a chance to guess. The money donated will go to charity. Thank you!

2. 8th graders: Do you enjoy Halloween Festivities? Would you like to enter a candy raffle, do the limbo, or enjoy other activities? If so, you should come to the Halloween dance for that and much more! The dance will be held tonight, October 27th from 6-8 pm in the cafeteria. We hope to see you there!
3. The 5th and 6th grade BMS Science Olympiad team will meet today. The meeting will be quick and hopefully end by 3:20 pm. Please hurry to get to Ms. Moser’s room 168 after school today for the meeting!

Bay Middle School bowling club begins on Thursday, November 3 after school at Bay Lanes and is open to all students. The club will run for five weeks on Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:45 pm. Payne remains in the lead for 8th grade with 311 AND is the only 8th grade class with any Box Tops! Two weeks remain in the contest - bring in your BoxTops and deposit them in the container in the cafeteria. 1. This past Friday our BMS Power of the Pen competition writing team traveled to the College of Wooster to compete in the Power of the Pen State Finals. Over 700 writers from 270 schools in Ohio participated in the all-day writing tournament. Students from grades 7 and 8 competed in three 35-minute writing rounds, each with a different prompt. Representing Bay Middle School at the State Tournament were: ¬7th graders – Jossi Meaux, Kayla Poling, Kendall Thomas, Abigail Donahue, and Anya Krumbine & 8th grader – Laura Wirtz who successfully competed at District and Regional tournaments to qualify for State Finals. Also a big congrats to the two 8th graders who qualified for States as well: Elizabeth Holup and Juliana Reising. A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO 7th graders Jossi Meaux and Kayla Poling for making it to the fourth “Power Round”, meaning they are in the top 54 competition writers in the entire state of Ohio! Well done all! And a reminder to all Power of the Pen members: We will be having our end of the year celebration this Thursday, June 2nd, after school from 3 – 3:45 in Mrs. Goldberg’s room; please come!

2. Your heart is the strongest and most important muscle in your body. Your heart is like a pump, or two pumps in one. The right side of your heart receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart does the exact opposite. It receives blood from the lungs and pumps it out to the body. Don't forget to share the message and raise money for Hoops for Heart when you can!
If we reach our school goal of $9,000, those that helped to raise money will have the opportunity to duck tape Mrs. Crumbacher to the cafeteria wall!

All you need to do in order to participate is pick-up a flyer outside room 135 (6th Grade Wing), get a team together, and return just one application to Mr. Illenberger by this Friday, April 15th. 4. This past weekend our BMS Power of the Pen competition writing team traveled to Perkins Briar Middle School in Sandusky to compete in the Power of the Pen Regional Tournament. The competition was intense as there were 23 other area schools each with their top 7th and 8th grade regional writers. After three 40 minute writing rounds, our ladies came out on top! Six of our writers earned individual awards: CONGRATULATIONS to 7th grader Kendall Thomas who won 8th place out of all of the 7th grade writers and Kayla Poling who earned 4th place! 7th grader Jossi Meaux also won a Best of the Best award for her piece, “Angels” from Districts, and she will be published in the Power of the Pen Book of Winners! In 8th grade CONGRATULATIONS to Juliana Reising who won 15th place out of all of the 8th grade writers, Laura Wirtz who earned 14th place, and Elizabeth Holup who earned 2nd place! Elizabeth Holup also won a “Best of Round” award for Round 2 with her story titled, “The Countdown of a Lifetime.”
The writers didn’t stop there. The entire BMS 7th grade Power of the Pen competition writing team won THIRD PLACE and earned themselves a big trophy (please stop by the Main Office to see it!) Our 7th and 8th grade writing teams did so well we also earned 2nd place for the “Sweepstakes” award which means all writers earned top scores!
5. This past Saturday the Science Olympiad team competed in their regional meet at Westlake High School. The Science Olympiad team consists of Emma Spirolli, Abby Choo, Clare Schlegel, Sabina Williams, Jake Mlakar, Charlie Russell, and Katie Knight. The team placed 7th overall in the competition. Individual awards went to: Emma Spirolli, Abby Choo, and Clare Schlegel placed 6th in Experimental Design. Emma Spirolli and Katie Knight placed 6th in Dynamic Planet. Charlie Russell and Katie Knight placed 6th in Disease Detectives.
Science Olympians, you guys did awesome this year! Thanks for all of your hand work and dedication.

Look for posters and listen for announcements for each day's fundraising activity!

1. The results of the final Continental Math League Meet are in! Individual top scorers for each grade go to: 5th grade a four way tie between Renee Duffy, Andy Mold, Owen Ballog and Reed Clark. 6th grade the only perfect score was Aidan Cashmere. 7th grade two perfect scores went to Abbey Donahue and Ryan McNamara. 8th grade a huge congrats for the 8 students with perfect scores so an 8 way tie between Elizabeth Holup, Dean Cashmere, Eddie Papp, Hunter Darst, Owen Meadows, Jake Mlakar, Audrey Ray and Natalie Surdy. The 8th grade team had the overall highest score of all the grades in the middle school. Thanks to all the participants who competed and tried their hardest and 8th grade we’ll see you at the OHIO MATH LEAGUE when you get to the high school!

2. The eighth grade teachers would like to announce the following winners in the spaghetti challenge last Friday. In third place, Jake Dodd, Audrey Ray, Amanda Vargics and Josh Perrine at 26 inches. Second Place: Meredith Heldt, Eddie Papp, Tommy Lombardi and Dayna Pochaska at 26.5 inches. And coming in at 27.5 inches - Trevor Ifft, Eliza Alexsandrovic, Elizabeth Holup and Mollie Hunsdorf.
Grade job eighth graders in tackling this challenge!
3. We have two winners from our winter Box Top contest. Mr. Illenberger’s 6th grade class and Mrs. Budzik’s 8th grade class have both earned a pizza party! Congratulations to both classes and thank you to everyone who participated! In all, we collected enough Box Tops so that the school earned $800! Yay!

The 8th grade girl’s basketball team won their 8th game of the season by beating Rocky River 30-22. The ladies jumped out to a 16 to 4 first quarter lead and had to battle the rest of the way. The Rockets played a great first half and then had to tough it out through the third quarter. One again defense and rebounding were keys to the win.

2. The 7th Grade Town Council would like to thank everyone that helped out and participated in the Valentine's Day activities, and after 5 days of hunting for Cupids throughout the building the block with the most points is the Westside, that's Caddey, Scanniello, Goldberg, and Fitchpatrick's block. The total as of Friday was 490 to 360. The winning block will get their winning later this week.

1. French students, the results are in! With over 130 people attending the annual Mardi Gras Party, a record number of votes were cast for top masks and floats! Tied for 4th place for favorite mask are Sara Dyke and Ella Bartley; 3rd place goes to Maddie Groff; 2nd place is Audrey Stratton, and the contest winner for favorite mask is Ryan McNamara! In the float contest, 4th place was also a tie between the Masquerade float by Mackenzie Lieber and Alex Papp and the Ancient Egypt float by Josh Harris. 3rd place goes to the Empire float by Charlie Russell, Audrey Gray and Kallie Kontis-Gleydura. 2nd place is Mardi Gras at the North Pole by Ellie Laotte, Paige Thompson, and Nina Uniatowski. The contest winner for best float is Mardi Gras on the Beach, by Kyla Shannon and Lilly Allan. Mrs. Krebs would like to thank everyone who attended the party and congratulate all her students, whose projects made Mardi Gras 2016 one to remember!
2. We did not get many Box Tops last week. There are two more weeks to bring in Box Tops - marked with your home base teachers name and placed in the collection box in the cafeteria. Remember this is not a competition against other classes in your grade level - every class with over 1,000 Box Tops collected during this contest will earn a pizza party for their class. There are only three classes with over 400 box Tops - so we need to step up our game!

2. Congratulations go out to Anna Mayer, Mrs. Kralik's class. Anna is one of only 42 students out of 974 entries from the state of Ohio who are moving to the next level of judging in the Letters About Literature contest sponsored by the Library of Congress. Way to go, Anna!
3. The results of the fourth continental math league meet are in! Participants, you will be getting your results back from your regular math teacher. Be sure to check their answer key to see the solutions of the problems you may have missed to get better for next time! Ms. Moser was so impressed with this meet! It was the best meet at BMS this year. Four kids had a perfect score!

3. This past weekend our BMS Power of the Pen competition writing team traveled to Columbia Middle School to compete in the Power of the Pen District Tournament. The competition was fierce and our ladies were very successful. Four of our writers earned individual awards: CONGRATULATIONS to 7th grader Jossi Meaux who won 6th place out of all of the 7th grade writers and Kayla Poling who earned 2nd place! In 8th grade CONGRATULATIONS to Courtney Dixon who won 5th place out of all of the 8th grade writers and Elizabeth Holup who earned 4th place! Both 7th and 8th grade writing teams earned team awards and the entire BMS 7th grade Power of the Pen competition writing team won FIRST PLACE and earned themselves a giant trophy (please stop by the Main Office to see it!) CONGRATULATIONS to Kendall Thomas, Jossi Meaux, Kayla Poling, Abigail Donahue, Elizabeth Kotora and Anya Krumbine. The entire BMS 8th grade Power of the Pen competition writing team won SECOND PLACE and also earned themselves a giant trophy (please stop by the Main Office to see it!) 4. This year’s winter contest for Box Tops for Education is now running through Friday, February 26, 2016. Each home base that collects over 1,000 Box Tops will receive a pizza party. Tallies will be posted in the cafeteria and announced starting Monday, February 1, 2016! Please send in Box Tops with the Home Base Teacher’s Name and grade on each bag and then put them in the collection box in the cafeteria on a regular basis or drop them off directly in the collection box in the cafeteria. The 5th grade Destination Imagination Team, the 7 Doughnuts, is collecting new items and money donations to buy items to make Cancer Care Packages for children with cancer. Here are some of the items they are looking to collect: fuzzy kid’s socks, hats, ball caps, winter hats, hard candies, chap sticks, lotions, coloring books and crayons, small craft kits and small stuffed animals. The collection will run through February 5 at all Bay Schools and Bay Library.

4. This past Saturday a group of twelve 5th and 6th graders attended the 23rd annual Young Astronauts Day at NASA Glenn Research Center. It was a fun-filled day with some great competition. The members of the 2015 team were 5th graders Iain Ray, PJ Sobczak, Nathan Dacek, Elise Kelley, Anna Mayer and Amy Burgy and 6th graders Rachel Leighliter, Annie Mullahy, Avery Tenerowicz, Gus Priemer, Jonathan Mack and Jack Rhea. The team of Rachel, Annie and Avery took honorable mention in the “Winging It” competition. Congratulations girls and
thanks to all team members for a great day!

1. The moment you’ve all been waiting for! It’s the long awaited moment of pig race results for this year’s Magazine Sale! There was a tie for 2nd place in 7th grade… so they both get to participate in the fun! Pigs will be delivered to the office this week. Those homerooms that won will get a Pizza Party on the day of the Pig Race Assembly - Tuesday 11/24during their lunch period. Pizza, drinks, plates and napkins will be provided! Congrats and thanks for your help and making this a huge success this year selling over 1,300 magazines!! Scaniello waited until the last week to bring in their box tops and won the 7th grade contest. Bradjic waited until the last week and won the 8th grade contest! We are all winners as this contest earned over $1,000 for Bay middle school. Well done!

Red Ribbon week was started when Drug Enforcement Agent Kiki Camerena was murdered in Mexico City in 1985. 1. We’re off to a great start with this year’s magazine sale. BMS has already sold 305 magazines totaling $6, 959.00 in sales-which equals about $2, 785.00 in profits!! This is the largest amount of online orders we’ve had this early in the sale. So far 5th grade: $3,025 in total sales, 6th grade: $1, 884.00 in total sales, 7th grade: $1, 754.00 in total sales and 8th grade: $193.00 in sales. Coming up next, students that sent 12 emails by last Thursday will be getting their Selfie Sticks by Tuesday and we will be having a cash drawing in each grade. FIRST TURN IN DAY IS THIS TUESDAY…TOMORROW…it’s double credit day. That means for every magazine you sell you get 2 times the credit towards the end of sale prizes like a Cosmic Bowling Party, Sky Zone tickets and Cavs Tickets.
